In all cases, the topologies support both running on physical hardware as well as virtual machines. When in virtual machines, the underlying hypervisor doesn’t require Hyper-V; it can be VMware, KVM, Xen, etc.

Stretch Cluster allows configuration of computers and storage in a single cluster, where some nodes share one set of asymmetric storage and some nodes share another, then synchronously or asynchronously replicate with site awareness. This scenario can utilize Storage Spaces with shared SAS storage, SAN and iSCSI-attached LUNs. It is managed with PowerShell and the Failover Cluster Manager graphical tool, and allows for automated workload failover. +

Cluster to Cluster allows replication between two separate clusters, where one cluster synchronously or asynchronously replicates with another cluster. This scenario can utilize Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Spaces with shared SAS storage, SAN and iSCSI-attached LUNs. It is managed with PowerShell and requires manual intervention for failover. Support for Azure Site Recovery of this scenario is scheduled.+

You can use any number of servers supported by Microsoft in each cluster, which is currently 8 for a Storage Spaces Direct cluster and 64 for a shared storage cluster

What’s new for Storage Replica in Windows Server, version 1709

Two new features are available in Windows Server, version 1709:+

  • The test failover feature. This allows mounting of destination storage in order to validate replication or backup data. For more info, see https://aka.ms/srfaq

  • The "Project Honolulu" Server Manager Experience tool now supports managing Storage Replica graphically for server-to-server configurations, with no need to use PowerShell for general deployment, management, failover, and removal operations operations.

Additionally, Windows Server, version 1709:+

  • Contains multiple bug fixes

  • Alters asynchronous stretch cluster behaviors so that automatic failovers now occur

Failover Clusters can now therefore be created in the following configurations:

  • Single-domain Clusters: Clusters with all nodes joined to the same domain
  • Multi-domain Clusters: Clusters with nodes which are members of different domains
  • Workgroup Clusters: Clusters with nodes which are member servers / workgroup (not domain joined)
